VANCOUVER, January 18, 2008 - On behalf of the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, Nina Grewal, Member of Parliament (Fleetwood-Port Kells) today announced funding for the Vancouver East Cultural Centre.
An investment of $160,000 will be used by the Vancouver East Cultural Centre (VECC) to present its 2008-2009 season of theatre, dance, and music. The season will feature 143 performances and include a Kids Series, a Family Series, and the continuation of the VECC's multi-faceted Youth Outreach Program.
"The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of supporting performing arts venues that bring cultural experiences to Canadians," said Minister Verner. "Culture plays an important role in healthy communities, and we are proud to fund an organization that enriches the cultural life of Lower Mainland residents."
"The Vancouver East Cultural Centre has developed into one of Canada's most unique and diverse performance spaces," said Mrs. Grewal. "I am proud to be part of a government that is committed to providing access to the arts for all Canadians, and to fostering professional arts experiences for young audiences."
"We're thrilled by this announcement and congratulate Canadian Heritage for their leadership role as they increase funding for our upcoming season," said Heather Redfern, Executive Director of the Vancouver East Cultural Centre. "This support comes at a pivotal time for The Cultch, as the 2008-2009 season will see our 35th anniversary, along with the opening of our new studio theatre and the restoration of our existing building."
The Vancouver East Cultural Centre opened as a performing arts centre in October 1973. "The Cultch," as the facility is affectionately known, has played a vital role in the development of Canadian theatre, dance, and music with its innovative productions, presentations, and audience development programs.
The Government of Canada has provided this funding through the Arts Presentation Canada program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
