MONTRÉAL, January 20, 2008 - On behalf of the Honourable Jason Kenney, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity), Luc Harvey, Member of Parliament (Louis Hébert), will participate in the 5th Martin Luther King Jr. Interfaith Breakfast, at City Hall, in Montréal, tomorrow.
In 2005, Montréal Mayor Gérald Tremblay proclaimed the third Monday of the month of January as Martin Luther King Junior Day in Montréal. This is a multi-denominational activity that pays tribute to one of the leading figures of the Civil Rights Movement.
"What could be more gratifying than to pay tribute to such a great man! Martin Luther King Junior secured his place in history by fighting tirelessly for equality and respect for human rights," said Mr. Harvey. "For the Government of Canada, this has significance because equality, and human and civil rights are an integral part of Canadian culture."
The Government of Canada is committed to reaching out to all Canadians and is developing lasting relationships with ethnic and religious communities in Canada. The Government of Canada encourages these communities to participate fully in Canadian society by enhancing their level of economic, social, and cultural integration.
