MONTRÉAL, QUEBEC, February 29, 2008 - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, was in Montréal today to speak about Canada's work to promote international labour rights through free trade agreements.
"The Government of Canada's engagement and its activities in the Americas give us the opportunity to share and promote our Canadian values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law," said Minister Blackburn. "Moreover, by negotiating stronger labour cooperation agreements with other countries, we are striving to ensure respect for workers rights and protect Canadian businesses from unfair competition," added the Minister.
During a luncheon in Montréal, Minister Blackburn addressed members of the Montréal Council on Foreign Relations. The Minister took this opportunity to discuss the Government of Canada's renewed engagement in the Americas to increase prosperity and improve security throughout the hemisphere.
The purpose of the visit is to highlight the Government of Canada's commitment from the Speech from the Throne to strengthen Canada's place in the world.
