Canada Welcomes Colombia's Ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty

News Release

February 2, 2008
No. 26
The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following
statement:
“Canada welcomes the addition of Colombia to the list of countries that have now
ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty. By ratifying this Treaty, President
Álvaro Uribe Vélez’s government is further demonstrating Colombia’s commitment to
the core values of successful countries: freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule
of law.
“Canada has long taken an active role in promoting the ratification and implementation
of the Treaty in the Americas. We consider the Treaty to be indispensable to ensuring
international nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.”
The Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) is a landmark international
agreement that aims to ban all nuclear explosions, including nuclear weapon test
explosions. Colombia’s ratification is particularly significant because only nine
ratifications are now required for the Treaty to enter into force. To date, 144 countries
have ratified the Treaty.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Canada’s re-engagement with the Americas
during his July 2007 trip to a number of Caribbean and Latin American countries. The
trip included a visit to Colombia and a meeting with President Uribe during which they
discussed a range of issues, including efforts to enhance regional security.
More information on the CTBT and its implementing agency, the Preparatory
Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization is available
