Ellerslie, PE - The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, announced today, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, a contribution of up to $10,275 to The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #22 (Ellerslie). The funds, provided through Veterans Affairs Canada's Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program, will be used to help restore and conserve the Ellerslie Cenotaph in Ellerslie, Prince Edward Island.
"The Community of Ellerslie has shown great commitment to commemoration," said
Minister Thompson. "Supporting the restoration of memorials is one way our Government is ensuring that the actions of our fallen soldiers are remembered in communities across the country."
The Ellerslie Cenotaph honours those local residents who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Funds provided will support relocating the cenotaph and its accompanying flags from the Legion ball field property to the Legion. Two new stones will also be added to the existing monument.
"This cenotaph has always been a symbol of commemoration and remembrance for the Community of Ellerslie," said Minister MacKay. "Relocating this cenotaph will help preserve it and make it more accessible for future ceremonies and visitors."
The Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program helps communities across Canada to preserve the memory of those who have served our country. Through partnerships with community groups and local organizations, the cenotaphs and monuments honouring Veterans, Canada's war dead and significant events, are maintained with the standard of care and dignity that they deserve.
