Federal Government Invests in Newfoundland & Labrador Small Craft Harbour Improvements

News Release

February 16, 2008
Gander, NL The Government of Canada is launching improvement projects at four Newfoundland fishing harbours to provide local fish harvesters with access to safer, more efficient facilities, the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced today.
"The federal government is keenly aware of the importance of safe and functional harbours to the economies of coastal communities," said Minister Hearn. "This government understands that Canadian fish harvesters require modern infrastructure to compete in the global fishing industry and we're committed to keeping these facilities in good operating condition for years to come."
These projects will be implemented by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the local harbour authorities that manage and operate the facilities for the benefit of the local users. This close cooperation with clients allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers.
Spending to complete projects at La Scie, Happy Adventure, Codroy and Cow Head harbours will be approximately $4.6 million.
