CORNER BROOK, Newfoundland and Labrador, February 14, 2008 - On behalf of the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Member of Parliament (St. John's South-Mount Pearl), today announced funding for the Corner Brook Winter Carnival.
Funding of $3,500 will assist the Corner Brook Winter Carnival in covering the costs of local artist performances at the opening and closing ceremonies. This community festival celebrates winter, fosters community spirit and pride, and supports economic development and tourism. Now in its 37th year, the Corner Brook Winter Carnival will take place from February 15 to 24, 2008.
"The Government of Canada is pleased to announce funding for the Corner Brook Winter Carnival, one of the first festivals to receive funding under the new Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program," said Minister Verner. "We are proud to partner with communities to support activities that celebrate local history, arts, and heritage."
"Local festivals like this one bring people of all ages and backgrounds together and contribute to building strong communities," said Minister Hearn. "I am proud that our Government has taken decisive steps to strengthen our shared sense of heritage."
"While, for many, winter is a time to stay indoors, the Corner Brook Winter Carnival celebrates the season and brings people together to appreciate the beauty of our environment," said Shirley Brake, General Manager of Corner Brook Winter Carnival Inc. "With the financial assistance of the Department of Canadian Heritage and the superb efforts of our dedicated volunteers, we are able to offer what promises to be another exciting program filled with events and activities for people of all ages."
The new Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage (BCAH) program, announced in September 2007, provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in local activities that present arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage. This program will benefit many community events and celebrations in Canada throughout the coming year.
