PERTH-ANDOVER, New Brunswick, February 20, 2008 - On behalf of the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, Mike Allen, Member of Parliament (Tobique-Mactaquac) today announced funding for the Perth-Andover Winter Carnival.
Funding of $5,400 will help the Perth-Andover Recreation Commission expand this annual event by increasing promotion and adding a Night of Music component that features local artists. This winter event, which will take place this year from February 17 to March 2, 2008, has been bringing the community together for more than 40 years to enjoy the scenic views and quality of life the village has to offer.
"The Government of Canada is pleased to announce funding for the Perth-Andover Winter Carnival, one of the first festivals to receive funding under the new Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program," said Minister Verner. "We are proud to partner with communities to support activities that celebrate local history, arts, and heritage."
"Local festivals such as this one bring people of all ages and backgrounds together and contribute to communities' quality of life," said Mr. Allen. "I am proud that our Government is supporting such an important event for the community."
"The 2008 Perth-Andover Winter Carnival has been well attended since it started. With the financial support from Canadian Heritage, this year's carnival is bound to be one of the most fun-filled yet," said Jason Walsh, Recreation Director. "Many activities are scheduled for the entire community, with the highlight being the 40th crowning of the Perth-Andover Winter Carnival Queen."
The new Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage (BCAH) program, announced in September 2007, provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in local activities that present arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage. This program will benefit many community events and celebrations in Canada throughout the coming year.
