The Government of Canada Takes Action to Revitalize Cartier-Brébeuf

News Release

QUÉBEC, QUEBEC, February 20, 2008 -- On behalf of Canada's Environment Minister John Baird, the Member of Parliament for Beauport-Limoilou, Sylvie Boucher, today announced a $2.5 million contribution to revitalize a portion of the Lairet River located within Cartier-Brébeuf National Historic Site of Canada.
"Our Government is proud to support this project that will restore Lairet River while preserving the site's integrity," said Ms. Boucher. "This important investment will allow the people of my riding to regain a magnificent urban space, right here in Québec City."
This project will preserve, improve and promote Cartier-Brébeuf National Historic Site of Canada in time for the 400th anniversary of Québec City. Our Government will spend $2.5 million on removing the current canalization, restoring Lairet River's original bed, and consolidating its banks and shores. The revitalization project began in January and will be completed at the end of May. During construction, cyclists will keep access to the bicycle path.
Cartier-Brébeuf National Historic Site of Canada commemorates the period in 1535-1536 when Jacques Cartier and his shipmates wintered near the Iroquoian village of Stadacona. This national historic site also pays tribute to the establishment of the first residence of the Jesuit missionaries in Québec, in 1625-1626. Cartier-Brébeuf is part of Parks Canada's system of national parks and national historic sites in Quebec, which provide visitors with exceptional heritage experiences.
