Minister Day Commends Efforts to Restore Hydro in Prince Edward Island

Speech

February 5, 2008 — The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, made the following statement today:
"I would like to recognize the exceptional efforts of all those involved in the restoration of hydro power in Prince Edward Island following the severe ice storm. Last week's storm left thousands on the Island without heat and electricity.
First responders, including Maritime Electric crews, local and provincial officials, and volunteer organizations like the Red Cross, were on the scene working to clear debris and restore power, and providing care to individuals, families and communities. Everyone worked vigorously to ensure that priority local needs were met, and I would like to acknowledge and thank all those involved for their hard work and dedication.
I have spoken with Premier Robert Ghiz and Minister Carolyn Bertram, Minister for Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour, about the response to the storm. I was pleased to hear their encouraging words with respect to the high degree of collaboration between the different levels of government in dealing with the power outage. We also agreed to continue our discussions to build on lessons learned so that this kind of co-operation can be enhanced."
