OTTAWA, Ontario, February 19, 2008 − The Honourable Michael M Fortier, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, today announced the appointment of Ms. Shirley McClellan to the Board of Directors of Defence Construction Canada (DCC).
"I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Shirley McClellan for a term of four years. She has extensive experience in the public sector and will surely be a strong asset to the Board," stated Minister Fortier.
Ms. Shirley McLellan is currently a Distinguished Scholar in Residence with the University of Alberta’s School of Business and Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Home Economics. Ms. McLellan is also a Member of the Board of Directors of Penn West Energy Trust.
Ms. Shirley McLellan has had an outstanding career in political life. She was first elected to the Alberta Legislature in 1987, where she remained until 2007, having been elected for six terms. She held a variety of Alberta Cabinet positions including: Minister of Health, Minister Responsible for the Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission, Minister Responsible for the Seniors Advisory Council for Alberta, Minister of Community Development, and Minister of International and Intergovernmental Relations. In 2001, after being elected for her fifth term, she was appointed Deputy Premier and Minister of Agriculture. In 2004, after being elected for her sixth term, in addition to Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance, she was appointed Chair of the Treasury Board and Vice-Chair of the Agenda and Priorities Committee. She resigned her seat in 2007.
Defence Construction Canada is a federal Crown corporation that reports to Parliament through the Minister of Public Works and Government Services. The corporation provides contracting, construction contract management and related infrastructure services to the Department of National Defence. More than 1,500 contracts a year are awarded by DCC for professional services, construction, goods and other infrastructure related works, throughout Canada and overseas, totaling up to half a billion dollars.
