OTTAWA, February 8, 2008 — The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, today announced that Kelly-Ann Speck has been re-appointed as a full-time member of the National Parole Board (NPB) and has been designated as Vice-Chairperson of the Pacific Region. Minister Day also announced the appointment of Gordon McRae as a part-time member in the Pacific Region.
Kelly-Ann Speck, who resides in Mission, B.C., is an Aboriginal from the Namgis First Nation and has served as Vice-Chairperson of the NPB since January 2003. Prior to joining NPB, Ms. Speck held a number of senior management positions with the British Columbia government including: Executive Director of Policy, Planning and Legislation at the Ministry of the Attorney General from 2000 to 2003; Commissioner of Investigation and Mediation at the Human Rights Commission from 1997 to 2000; Vice-President of Planning and Evaluation with the Transportation Financing Authority from 1996 to 1997; Assistant Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Skills, Training and Labour between 1994 and 1996; and, a senior policy advisor and Assistant Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs from 1989 to 1994.
Gordon McRae from Mission, B.C., has been appointed as a part-time member of NPB. He served as a member of the RCMP for 25 years with postings in Penticton, Maple Ridge, Coquitlam and Surrey. Mr. McRae currently works as a Crime Prevention Coordinator for the city of Surrey.
"This underlines the federal government's commitment to ensuring that appointments to the National Parole Board are based on merit and ability," said Minister Day. "The National Parole Board is an independent decision-making tribunal that plays a significant role in contributing to the safety of our communities. It is important, therefore, that we appoint highly qualified and committed people," he added.
