OTTAWA, February 4, 2008 - The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) today announced the start of public consultations on the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed Romaine Hydroelectric Complex Project, north of the municipality of Havre-Saint-Pierre, Quebec.
The EIS was filed by the project proponent, Hydro-Québec. This consultation period will enable interested individuals and groups to comment on the adequacy of the impact statement in relation to the guidelines issued for its preparation.
The EIS and the guidelines for the preparation of the EIS are posted on the Agency's Web site.

The Romaine project is a 1500 MW hydroelectric complex on the Romaine River, which would include four power stations along the river and the creation of new reservoirs covering an expanse of approximately 275 km2. There are also plans to build an access road of roughly 160 km to link Route 138 to the site.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
