Ottawa, February 14, 2008
I am pleased to extend best wishes to Canadians on National Flag of Canada Day.
Forty-three years ago, a new Canadian flag was raised over Parliament Hill. Red and white were designated as Canada’s official colours in 1921 by His Majesty King George V. This is a perfect opportunity to celebrate our flag and what it stands for – a Dominion that is the envy of the world.
As we commemorate this important day, I encourage Canadians to learn about the history of the national flag of Canada as well as other flags that are an important part of Canada’s rich heritage: the St. George’s Cross, the Royal Banner of France, the Royal Union Flag, and the Red Ensign. Our flags represent the struggles, sacrifices, and achievements of the diverse people who helped build this nation.
As Secretary of State (Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity), I join with Canadians across the country in celebrating National Flag of Canada Day.
