Statement from Minister Bernier on the Security and Humanitarian Situation in Somalia

The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today expressed concern
about the serious security and humanitarian situation in Somalia.
“Canada is deeply concerned about the security and humanitarian situation in Somalia.
A political solution, including the Transitional Federal Government and other parties,
must be found to end the violence, deprivation and displacement. The solution must
ensure respect for international humanitarian law and the delivery of aid. The situation
is of particular concern to Somali-Canadians and various groups with whom the
government is consulting on the best means to move forward.
“Canada also condemns the killing on January 28 of three Médecins Sans Frontières
aid workers and a Somali reporter. This incident points to the importance of the safety
and security of all humanitarian workers, who are there to assist those in need.”
Since December 2006, Canada has provided approximately $15 million in humanitarian
assistance in response to both the ongoing conflict and natural disasters in Somalia,
and $3.75 million in regional funding to UN agencies assisting internally displaced
persons in Somalia and Somali refugees in neighbouring countries.
