Walkerton, ON - Larry Miller, Member of Parliament for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, announced today, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, a contribution of up to $3,065 to the Municipality of Brockton. The funds, provided through Veterans Affairs Canada's Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program, will be used to help restore and conserve the Walkerton Cenotaph in Walkerton, Ontario.
"Cenotaphs honour the many Canadians who have given so much in the name of peace and freedom," said Minister Thompson. "Supporting the restoration of these memorials is one way our Government is ensuring the actions of our service men and women are remembered in communities across the country."
The Walkerton Cenotaph honours those who served and those who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. Funds provided will be used for repairs to the base of the monument and the replacement of the surrounding wall. As well, funding will help extend a walkway to the cenotaph.
"This cenotaph is located in the heart of the Walkerton Memorial Park and has great importance to the Municipality of Brockton," said Mr. Miller. "This funding will assist the community in its efforts to honour all residents who served and all those who made the ultimate sacrifice."
The Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program helps communities across Canada to preserve the memory of those who have served our country. Through partnerships with community groups and local organizations, the cenotaphs and monuments honouring Veterans, war dead and significant events, are maintained with the standard of care and dignity that they deserve.
