The Honourable Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board, today announced Upper Fort Garry Heritage Park Complex will be considered as a priority for $1.5 million in funding by the Government of Canada.
With this funding commitment, the Friends of Upper Fort Garry (FUFG), a volunteer charitable organization, is one step closer to reaching its goal of preserving and improving one of the most significant historic sites in western Canada.
"The Government of Canada is pleased to support the development of what will become a major heritage and interpretive complex in Winnipeg," said Minister Toews. "This project, combined with other attractions such as The Forks and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, will enhance the city and the province's reputation as a tourist destination, and help preserve our shared history."
The Government of Canada's priority funding commitment of $1.5 million from Western Economic Diversification Canada is conditional upon the initiative meeting all applicable federal eligibility requirements, including successful completion of a due diligence review. The project is set to begin in the spring of 2008 and continue in phases for five years.
The Upper Fort Garry site was the hub of the fur trade beginning in the 1700's and at one time impacted most markets throughout North America. By developing spaces depicting the original Fort in symbolic form and educating visitors on its impact on the history of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Canada, it has the potential of attracting thousands of visitors annually.
