Powerview-Pine Falls, Manitoba
Community Futures Winnipeg River (CFWR) will be able to support the development of a business plan for the Pine Falls railway line thanks to an investment from Western Economic Diversification.
An investment worth $78,750 was announced today by the Honourable Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board, on behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Western Economic Diversification.
"The Government of Canada is proud to support innovative approaches which help communities grow and diversify their economies," said Minister Toews. "Our Government's investment of nearly $79,000 for this business plan will help support the long-term sustainability of the Powerview-Pine Falls region."
The business plan aims to develop a strategy that will facilitate long-term operation of the Pine Falls railway line that runs from Bird's Hill to Pine Falls, Manitoba. Maintaining existing customers and establishing partnerships on the railway line will ensure its long-term viability. Such business activity is critical to ensuring economic growth, rural diversification and increased value-added production in Eastern Manitoba.
"We recognize the importance of the rail line to existing industry and for future economic development opportunities in the region," said Teresa Gmiterek, Chairperson of Community Futures Winnipeg River. "The support from the federal government will allow us to participate in the study to determine options for the viability of continued rail operations and potential business growth that may benefit from rail service."
The project involves providing the capacity to develop a business plan that will include an assessment of current financial shortfalls relating to the railway line and of rail traffic enhancement opportunities. The plan will also propose a strategic and phased approach to public-private partnerships.
This project also lies within the framework of Western Economic Diversification Canada's Sustainable Development Strategy for it promotes continued and increased use of rail transportation, which is by far one of the most environmentally friendly modes of transportation.
Western Economic Diversification Canada is the federal department mandated to promote the economic diversification and development of Western Canada through initiatives that advance sustainable communities, innovation and entrepreneurship.
