Mawlid al-Nabiy, the anniversary of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, is one of the three largest celebrations of the Islamic calendar. Muslims in Canada and around the world celebrate the Prophet's birth, life, and teachings with prayers, readings from the Qu'ran, feasts, good deeds, and compassion toward the poor.
This special day is an excellent opportunity for all Canadians to reflect on the many contributions the Muslim community has made to our country's rich heritage.
As Secretary of State (Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity) and on behalf of the Government of Canada, I encourage Canadians to join me in extending best wishes to everyone celebrating Mawlid al-Nabiy.
