On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to congratulate Canada’s national men’s baseball team on their outstanding performance in Taiwan to qualify for the Olympic Games this summer in Beijing, China.
We are all proud of the outstanding performance of our national baseball team. Our athletes are an inspiration to all Canadians. These men have demonstrated their talent and dedication to their sport and I am confident that they will make us proud again in Beijing.
Canada beat previously undefeated South Korea 4–3 at the qualifying tournament and with a 2-1 win against Germany finished with a final record of 6 wins and 1 loss. These results gave Canada first plac e in the 8-team qualifying tournament. Canada, South Korea and Chinese Taipei have clinched an Olympic berth.
Our Government is proud of all Canadian athletes who represent Canada on the international stage.
As Secretary of State (Foreign Affairs and International Trade) (Sport) and on behalf of the Government of Canada, I would also like to congratulate and thank Baseball Canada for all the work it does in developing players who continually shine on the world stage. Today’s per formance is further proof of their success.
