The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on the elections in Taiwan:
"I would like to congratulate Ma Ying-jeou on his election victory. The smooth and orderly elections came after a vigorous campaign, demonstrating that democracy is laying down strong roots.
"I also welcome Ma Ying-jeou's central election commitment to improve cross-strait relations with China. This is consistent with Canada's long-standing position that advocates for peaceful dialogue between the concerned parties."
