The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today released the following statement on the swearing-in of Pakistan's new federal cabinet in Pakistan, which took place on March 31, 2008:
"Canada welcomes the new prime minister of Pakistan and his cabinet. This outcome reflects the will of the Pakistani people expressed in the February 18 elections. We look forward to working with the new government to further advance democratic development.
"Pakistan is a key partner in the fight against terrorism. Canada welcomes the new government's commitment to combat terrorism and extremism and understands the threats that these pose to Pakistan.
"Canada intends to pursue strong bilateral relations with a democratic Pakistan in areas of mutual interest, including development cooperation, regional security and the promotion of human rights and the rule of law."
