OTTAWA - Captain Grimolfur Grimolfson today was posthumously granted Transport Canada's Marine Safety Award for 2008 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Canadian marine safety.
The award was presented to Captain Grimolfson's family at a brief ceremony held today in Ottawa at the biannual meeting of the Canadian Marine Advisory Council. "Captain Grimolfson had an exceptional safety record," said the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. "I am pleased to recognize his achievements with this award."
Captain Grimolfson was born on Hecla Island, Manitoba, in 1913 and died there in 1986. For 30 years, he ran the Hecla Island Ferry in all kinds of weather without incident. He also escorted islanders across the narrows during winter months. He is being recognized for his pioneering work and his dedication to marine safety.
The Canadian Marine Advisory Council is a consultative body that represents parties with a recognized interest in shipping, navigation and the prevention of marine pollution. The council is chaired by Transport Canada and meets twice a year to examine marine issues.
The Transport Canada Marine Safety Award was established in 1997 to promote awareness of marine safety in Canada and to recognize people, groups, companies, organizations, agencies or departments that have contributed, in an exceptional way, to this objective.
