For immediate release
HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, April 25, 2008 - The Honourable Michael M Fortier, Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC), and the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, today announced that PWGSC and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) will proceed with the implementation of the RCMP "H" Division Headquarters Relocation Project in Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia.
The RCMP's headquarters in Halifax will be consolidated into one location from nine locations. "This is a large and complex project," said Minister Fortier. "With expertise in real property, Public Works and Government Services Canada will take on a vital role in managing this project - allowing the RCMP to focus on providing Nova Scotians with safer homes and safer communities."
"The RCMP plays a crucial role in helping ensure the safety and security of Nova Scotia's communities," said Minister Day. "Our government is committed to tackling crime, which includes ensuring the RCMP has the tools and facilities needed to effectively fulfill its policing responsibilities. This new facility will allow for a more consolidated and integrated approach to policing and therefore help our police officers fulfill their important duty."
PWGSC and the RCMP are working together to provide a new headquarters facility for the RCMP "H" Division in Nova Scotia, through a lease-purchase arrangement. The new 5-story, 24,000 square-metre complex will be located in Halifax Regional Municipality's Burnside Business Park and will provide accommodation for over 500 headquarters personnel.
Today, PWGSC will launch the competitive developer selection process by issuing a Vendor Notification on MERX. The Vendor Notification will provide advance notice to development teams that PWGSC is expecting to issue a Request for Qualification later this Spring. Qualified teams may then be asked to respond to a detailed Request for Proposal later in the year. PWGSC will post all notices and requests on MERX at www.merx.com.
