The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement following elections in Nepal held on April 10, 2008:
"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish to extend sincere congratulations to the people of Nepal on the holding of successful elections. Despite some isolated incidents of intimidation and violence, as well as some irregularities, the overwhelming majority of Nepalese women and men voted in a peaceful, orderly and enthusiastic manner.
"In this landmark election, the Nepalese people, political parties, the Election Commission and civil society have demonstrated a remarkable commitment to democracy and sustainable peace. The elections constitute an important milestone in the peace process, and Canada will continue to support Nepal's efforts to achieve a more peaceful, stable and democratic society."
