Calgary, Alta., April 9, 2008 - On March 17, 2008, Chi Quang LO, manager of Winkey's Trading in Winnipeg, was sentenced a fine of $1,500.00 plus two years of unsupervised probation and ordered to write a letter of apology to a Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) inspector.
The accused was fined $750 each for two counts of violations to the Meat Inspection Act at the Winnipeg Law Courts Building.
By entering a guilty plea, Mr. Lo acknowledged that during a January 2005 inspection of Winkey's Trading he violated Section 14.(1), which states no person shall unlawfully obstruct or hinder, or make false or misleading statements orally to an inspector while the inspector is engaged in carrying out his or her duties or functions under this Act or their regulations.
The second count applied to imported Chinese hams on the premises that were in violation to the Meat Inspection Act.
The CFIA is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal legislation, including the Meat Inspection Act. It protects consumers by contributing to food safety, the protection of plants and the health of animals in Canada.
