The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement regarding the recent upsurge of violence in Lebanon:
"Canada strongly condemns the actions of Hezbollah to incite violence and to shut down the international airport in Beirut. These actions serve only to inflame sectarian divisions. Hezbollah and its supporters must not be allowed to pull Lebanon toward war.
"Canada supports the Government of Lebanon's efforts to bring about an end to the current crisis, including the immediate election of a president.
"We are monitoring the situation closely and are providing information to Canadians registered in Lebanon."
