The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement regarding the resumption of indirect peace talks between Israel and Syria:
"Canada welcomes the official announcements made by Israel and Syria that they are conducting peace talks mediated by Turkey. Canada is encouraged by the resumption of contact between the two countries and by their goal to reach a final agreement.
"We applaud Turkey for the important role it is playing as mediator in this process. We also commend both Israel and Syria on the steps they are taking toward peace. Canada supports all efforts to enhance peace in the region, and we hope that these negotiations will eventually lead to a comprehensive peace agreement."
