The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today denounced the recent spate of murders of senior Mexican police officials, including the May 8 assassination of Commissioner Edgar Eusebio Millán Gómez, acting director of the country's Federal Preventive Police Force.
"Canada deplores these acts of violence aimed at disrupting the rule of law in Mexico," said Minister Bernier.
"We stand firmly united with the Government of Mexico in their determination to combat the drug cartels and organized crime syndicates that endanger the lives of Mexico's citizens, and put at risk the security of that country and the region as a whole. Canada is ready to assist Mexico in this fight."
In 2007, the governments of Canada and Mexico signed a Joint Action Plan that includes a new framework for bilateral security cooperation, involving several federal government departments, and including areas such as collaboration on law enforcement.
