SAINT JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK, May 21, 2008-The Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, today announced funding to support two literacy organizations in New Brunswick that will give people the skills they need to succeed in the labour market.
"Our Government's long-term economic strategy, Advantage Canada, is to create the best educated, most skilled and most flexible work force in the world," stated Minister Solberg. "We're committed to helping these organizations fulfill their vital role in helping adult learners improve their literacy and essential skills so they can participate fully in the labour market."
Through the Office of Literacy and Essential Skills (OLES), the Government of Canada provided $297,905 to the Literacy Coalition of New Brunswick (LCNB). With this funding, the LCNB will continue to support project development, measure and report results, and develop partnerships. The LCNB will also provide OLES with local and regional information on the state of literacy and essential skills in the province of New Brunswick and ensure a strong national network.
Today's announcement also included $275,000 in funding for the Fédération d'alphabétisation du Nouveau-Brunswick Inc. (FANB). This organization will enhance its information base on how literacy in the Francophone community is evolving. The FANB will also help Francophone adults to develop their literacy and essential skills as well as enhance its national information network.
Literacy and essential skills programs and activities across Canada are supported by the federal, provincial and territorial governments, as well as by a variety of businesses and voluntary organizations. The Government of Canada welcomes the opportunity to work with partner organizations across the country to help Canadians improve their literacy skills and build better lives.
