MONTRÉAL, QUEBEC, May 12, 2008 - - On behalf of Canada's Environment Minister John Baird, Mr. Steven Blaney, Member of Parliament for Lévis–Bellechasse, unveiled a plaque today commemorating the national historic significance of the Grey Nuns of Montréal.
"Inspired by their founder, Marguerite d'Youville, the Grey Nuns made their mark in Canada's history through their devotion and their compassion towards the less fortunate across the country," said Mr. Blaney. "Our government is proud to recognize their important contribution to Canadian values."
The Grey Nuns of Montréal have earned a distinguished place among the country's religious congregations for their health care, charitable, and educational institutions as well as for their missionary work. Founded by Marguerite d'Youville in 1737 to help the poor, their community has expanded throughout Canada and abroad. True pioneers of social work, they were also the first nuns to work in Western Canada, starting in 1844.
Created in 1919, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada advises the Minister of the Environment about the national historic significance of places, persons and events that have marked Canada's history. The placement of a commemorative plaque represents an official recognition of their historic value. It creates public awareness about Canada's rich cultural heritage, which must be preserved for present and future generations.
