OTTAWA / CALGARY - May 6, 2008 - The Joint Panel established to review the proposed Kearl Oil Sands Project in Alberta, today submitted its rationale to the federal Minister of the Environment and the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB).
The Panel was reconstituted on April 11, 2008, in order to provide a rationale required by the Federal Court in support of its conclusion that the Kearl Project is not likely to result in significant adverse environmental effects to air quality, provided that the mitigation measures and recommendations proposed are implemented.
The Kearl project proposed by Imperial Oil Resources Ventures Limited includes the design, construction, operation, and reclamation of four open pit mines, ore preparation and bitumen extraction facilities, tailings management facilities and other supporting infrastructure. This project would be located approximately 70 kilometers north of Fort McMurray, Alberta.

The Joint Review Panel for the Kearl Oil Sands Project is an independent body, mandated by the federal Minister of the Environment and the EUB to assess the environmental effects of the proposed project.
