Janet Hiebert, professor of political science at Queen's University, has won the Bora Laskin National Fellowship in Human Rights Research. This one-year SSHRC award worth $45,000 supports multidisciplinary research that develops Canadian expertise in human rights. Hiebert will examine Parliament's reaction when courts rule some laws contrary to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Hiebert is the author of two books about the Charter: Charter Conflicts: What is Parliament's Role? (2002) and Limiting Rights: The Dilemma of Judicial Review (1996).
