The Government of Canada and the Province of Manitoba are supporting the City of Steinbach as it works to complete its Industrial Park. Through the Canada-Manitoba Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF), $1 million in joint funding from the federal and provincial governments will be used to fully develop the industrial park, which will ensure that the robust economic activity of Steinbach and the south-eastern region of Manitoba will continue.
The announcement was made today by the Honourable Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board, on behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Western Economic Diversification and the Honourable Ron Lemieux, Manitoba Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation.
"The Government of Canada is working in partnership to construct, restore and modernize Canada's infrastructure to improve the quality of life for all Canadians," said Minister Toews. "This collaborative investment will help to ensure the economic prosperity of Steinbach and the south-eastern region of Manitoba."
"Steinbach is a thriving community and we are pleased to support a project that will play an important role in its continued growth," said Minister Lemieux. "Manitoba is a great place to do business and the new industrial park will increase economic opportunities while creating jobs for area residents."
The City of Steinbach will use this investment to complete the project through Phase 3, which will include the completion of the road base and storm sewers and sewer mains; the installation of an intersection at Acres Drive/PTH; and the paving of all road surfaces.
At least 25 new businesses are expected to develop in the park and an estimated $31 million in direct capital investment in the City will result from the project within five years. It is also anticipated that 500 additional full time permanent jobs will be created over the next five years and $1 million in new municipal tax revenue per year will be generated by year five of the project.
"I am very pleased the federal and provincial levels of government have chosen to invest in our progressive and growing city," said Chris Goertzen, Mayor of the City of Steinbach. "Our city has a diverse economy that has given our city strength throughout the last 25 years and this new investment in our industrial park will help this diversity and strength to continue. The Steinbach Region has been one of the strongest economic growth areas in Manitoba and this funding will aid in the continuation of this contribution to our province."
The Canada-Manitoba MRIF is based on equal contributions from the Government of Canada, the Province of Manitoba and the City of Steinbach. The initial Canada-Manitoba MRIF agreement invested a total of $120 million in communities across Manitoba. This year, an additional $25 million is being provided to MRIF through matching funds from the governments of Canada, Manitoba and local contributions as part of the commitment to help small communities meet their pressing infrastructure needs. This additional funding will bring the total federal and provincial investment and matching local contribution in MRIF projects to $145 million.
