PLAMONDON, Alberta, June 30, 2008 - The community of Plamondon will celebrate its centennial anniversary with three days of festivities, thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada.
Brian Jean, Member of Parliament (Fort McMurray-Athabasca), on behalf of the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages and Minister for La Francophonie, today announced funding for the Plamondon District Community Development Society.
Funding of $38,440 will support the Society in staging 100th anniversary celebrations for Plamondon, which will be held from July 4 to 6, 2008. This year, the celebrations will take place under the theme "Rendezvous" and will be held in conjunction with La Fête franco-albertaine, an annual provincial summer festival. The combined celebrations will add to the variety of activities in both French and English. Planned activities include an arts and crafts fair, tours of heritage sites, family socials, talent performances, and a parade.
"The Government of Canada is pleased to support the Plamondon District Community Development Society's 100th anniversary celebrations," said Minister Verner. "We are proud to partner with communities to support activities that celebrate local history, arts, and heritage."
"It is important that future generations be aware of their origins and of Canada's rich and diverse heritage," said Mr. Jean. "The 100th anniversary celebrations for Plamondon will increase pride among members of our community."
"The Plamondon District Community Development Society would like to thank Canadian Heritage for their contribution towards our bilingual Centennial Celebration," said Paulette Paré, Administrator of the Plamondon District Community Development Society. "This will enable us to feature both local artists and professional artists to the community".
The Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage (BCAH) program, announced in September 2007, provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in local activities that present arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage. This program will benefit many community events and celebrations in Canada.
