ST. JOHN'S, June 30, 2008 - The Trinity Museum will have its collection of artefacts researched, digitized, and made available on the Internet, thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada.
The Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Member of Parliament (St. John's South-Mount Pearl), on behalf of the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages and Minister for La Francophonie, today announced funding for the Trinity Historical Society.
The Trinity Historical Society will receive funding of $27,390 to research and photograph about 1500 artefacts of the Trinity Museum's collection and upload them to the website of Artefacts Canada (
www.chin.gc.ca/English/Artefacts_Canada/index.html ). The museum currently has approximately 3000 artefacts. The project will also enable the Trinity Historical Society to acquire the knowledge and tools to complete the digitization of its museum collection in years to come.
"By investing in our heritage, we provide Canadians with opportunities to learn the stories of our diverse, shared history," said Minister Verner. "The Government of Canada is delighted to support the Trinity Historical Society as it provides a larger audience with access to the story of these precious artefacts."
"As one of the oldest historical societies in the province, the Trinity Historical Society is to be commended on promoting and preserving the history of Trinity and surrounding area," said Minister Hearn. "The rest of Canada and, indeed, the whole world will now have access to this fascinating museum collection."
"The Trinity Historical Society is very grateful to the Department of Canadian Heritage for its support of our project to complete the collections management work required at our Trinity Museum," said Jim Miller, Project Coordinator for the Trinity Historical Society. "This project will allow our collection will be cleaned and catalogued properly, and to be presented to a world-wide audience through the Internet on Artefacts Canada, hosted by the Canadian Heritage Information Network. This has been a long-term objective of the Society and to see it finally come to fruition will be very fulfilling."
The Government of Canada is providing this funding through the Department of Canadian Heritage's Museums Assistance Program. This program provides funding to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.
