VANCOUVER, June 5, 2008 - Two Vancouver-area museums will be better equipped to promote the diverse heritage of Canadian society and help Canadians understand our history, thanks to an investment from the Government of Canada.
The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety and Member of Parliament (Okanagan-Coquihalla), on behalf of the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages and Minister for La Francophonie, today announced funding for the University of British Columbia (UBC) Museum of Anthropology and the Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia.
The UBC Museum of Anthropology will use funding of $44,100 to capture, preserve, and share sound and moving images as they relate to the Museum and its collections. The Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia will use funding of $21,500 for an institution-wide implementation of the PastPerfect software package. The software will enhance the Museum's competencies in sharing information.
"The Government of Canada is proud to support local Museums in their efforts to provide all Canadians with access to their history," said Minister Verner. "We are committed to supporting projects that will enrich the cultural life of this community and create a legacy of excellence."
"The Government of Canada's support for the University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology and the Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia will enable the organizations to create a visual resource to benefit local citizens and visitors from throughout Canada." said Minister Day.
"The outstanding support Canadian Heritage has given the Museum of Anthropology enables us to remain one of the world's most outstanding museums," said Anthony Shelton, Director of the UBC Museum of Anthropology. "It provides us with the capacity to become a major, new regional venue for touring exhibitions and increases and enhances the services we offer to First Nations and other cultural communities."
The Government of Canada has provided this funding through the Museums Assistance Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides financial support to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.
