Ottawa (June 9, 2008) - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, announced today the appointment of Deborah M. Hanly to the Sahtu Arbitration Panel.
"Ms. Hanly has an extensive record of pubic service and dedication to her profession as a lawyer," said Minister Strahl. "We are proud to announce that Ms. Hanly is joining the Sahtu Arbitration Panel."
Deborah M. Hanly currently runs the Deborah M. Hanly Professional Corporation in Red Deer, Alberta. She has previously worked with the Manitoba Department of Justice- Manitoba Justice Inquiry, Privy Council Office, Commissions and Inquiries, and the Court of Appeal of Alberta.
The Sahtu Arbitration Panel resolves disputes in accordance with the Sahtu Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement (section 6.2.1). The Panel is composed of eight members, including a Chair and a Vice-Chair, both of whom are chosen by a majority of the Panel. Members are appointed by the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, following consultation with the Government of the Northwest Territories and Sahtu Secretariat Incorporated.
