OTTAWA (June 3, 2008) – The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, announced today the appointment of Larry Chartrand to the Sahtu Arbitration Panel.
“Mr. Chartrand has made distinguished contributions in Aboriginal community work,” said Minister Strahl. “I am confident that he will devote his professional excellence to the Panel. We are all looking forward to his input.”
Mr. Chartrand is currently a professor at the University of Ottawa in the faculty of law, and has lectured at a number of universities throughout Canada. He also plays an active role with the Canadian Bar Association Equality Implementation Committee, the Sahtu Dene and Métis Arbitration Panel and the Canadian Access to Legal Education Group.
The Sahtu Arbitration Panel resolves disputes in accordance with the Sahtu Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement (section 6.2.1). The Panel composed of eight members, including a Chair and a Vice-Chair, both of whom are chosen by a majority of the Panel. Members are appointed by the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, following consultation with the Government of the Northwest Territories and Sahtu Secretariat Incorporated.
