Ottawa (June 23, 2008) - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, today announced the appointment of Richard J. Francis Sr. (Kingsclear, New Brunswick) as a member of the National Aboriginal Economic Development Board (NAEDB).
"Mr. Francis brings to the Board a wealth of expertise in government and community relations, dispute resolution and negotiation," said Minister Strahl. "His knowledge and experience will be valuable assets to the Board as it moves forward with its important work."
In the coming year, the NAEDB will play a key role as the federal government works with Aboriginal groups and other stakeholders in developing a new Aboriginal Economic Development Framework for Canada. The Board will provide advice on how the Government and Aboriginal businesses and communities can work together more effectively to increase Aboriginal participation in the national economy, and ensure Aboriginal workers help fill gaps in Canada's labour market.
The National Aboriginal Economic Development Board is mandated by the federal Cabinet. The Board acts as a link between policy makers, legislators, government departments, and Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal business and community leaders, and provides counseling on all Aboriginal economic development matters. The members are appointed by Order-in-Council and are representative of all regions and Aboriginal heritage groups in Canada.
Mr. Francis' appointment is for three years and is effective immediately.
