OTTAWA, ONTARIO (June 20, 2008) - As Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, I invite all Canadians to take part in National Aboriginal Day celebrations on June 21. I also want to highlight that this year marks 400 years of shared culture and history between Aboriginal peoples and Europeans in Canada.
National Aboriginal Day is a day to show our appreciation for the substantial contributions that all Aboriginal people -- First Nations, Inuit and Métis -- have made to the rich fabric of Canada. It is also an occasion for Aboriginal people to celebrate their ancestral heritage around summer solstice, a day that has been significant to Aboriginal people for generations.
Come and share in the celebrations all across Canada on this important day.
