OTTAWA, July 17, 2008 - The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) is making available $175,000 under its Participant Funding Program to assist groups and individuals to take part in the environmental assessment of the proposed Bruce Power New Nuclear Power Plant Project in Kincardine, Ontario.
This funding is being made available to help successful applicants review the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that will be prepared by the proponent, Bruce Power. The funding may also be used to prepare for and participate in the public hearings that will be announced at a later date.
A Funding Review Committee, independent of the review panel, will consider all applications and make recommendations on the allocation of funds. Information on the proposed project and on the environmental assessment process is available on the Agency's Web site, under registry number 07-05-25738.
In August 2007, the Agency awarded a total of $50,000 to help four recipients review and comment on the draft Guidelines for the EIS that will be prepared by the project's proponent and to participate in a public information meeting that took place in May 2008.
The project is a proposal for the site preparation, and the construction, operation, decommissioning and abandonment of up to four new nuclear reactors at the existing Bruce Nuclear Site, located on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, north of Kincardine. The project is expected to generate approximately 4,000 megawatts of electricity to the Ontario grid.
