VANCOUVER, July 14, 2008 - The Government of Canada reiterated its support for Canadian athletes preparing for the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing, China during an event organized by the Canadian Sport Centre Pacific.
The Honourable James Moore, Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific Gateway) (2010 Olympics) (Official Languages) took part today in an event celebrating more than 70 British Columbia-based athletes and coaches preparing for the 2008 Games.
"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I am delighted and honoured to be here today to wish members of our Olympic and Paralympic teams well as they prepare to compete against the world's best athletes in Beijing," said Secretary of State Moore. "The cheers of the people who are gathered here will be a great reminder to our athletes that Canadians will always be there to support them as they reach for their dream."
From September 6 to 17, more than 4 000 athletes from 150 countries will compete in the XIII Summer Paralympic Games in Beijing, China.
During the celebratory event, Secretary of State Moore described the Olympic and Paralympic athletes as shining role models to Canadians of all ages, and congratulated them on their drive, determination and dedication.
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in this country, and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium. In 2008-09, the Government of Canada's investment in the Canadian sport system will reach an all-time high of $166 million annually.
