SUDBURY, Ontario, July 28, 2008 - Residents and visitors to Sudbury will have the opportunity to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Greater Sudbury Area, thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada.
The Honourab ble Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, on behalf of the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages and Minister for L a Francophonie, today announced funding for Prise de parole.
Funding of $35,000 will help Prise de parole organize a series of activities and events commemorating the 125th anniversary of the Greater Sudbury Area. The seven-month-long fes tival will showcase the history and heritage of Sudbury through artistic performances, photographic exhibitions, and other heritage celebrations taking place in a number of public venues in the Greater Sudbury area.
"The Government of Canad a is pleased to announce funding for Prise de parole on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Greater Sudbury Area," said Minister Verner. "We are proud to partner with communities to support activities that celebrate local history, arts, and herit age."
"It is important that future generations be aware of their origins and of Canada's rich and diverse heritage," said Minister Clement. "The activities organized by Prise de parole in honour of the 125th anniversary of the Greater Sudbu ry Area will increase pride among members of our community."
"With the support provided by Canadian Heritage, a group of Sudbury organizations will be able to respond to the celebrations of the 125th anniversary of the City of Greater Sudbu ry by highlighting important aspects of its history, heritage, and creative arts," said Denise Truax, executive director of Éditions Prise de parole. "The community will be asked to show more clearly the city's cultural vitality and to salute its dyn amism."
The Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, announced in September 2007, provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in events and activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local histor y and heritage. This program will benefit many community events and anniversaries throughout Canada this year.
