OTTAWA / ST. JOHN'S - July 15, 2008 - The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) and the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Environment and Conservation (the Department) today issued the final Guidelines for the preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Lower Churchill Hydroelectric Generation Project in Labrador.
The Guidelines will provide direction to the proponent, and will identify the information that will be required in the statement of the anticipated effects of the project on the environment. The Agency and the Department are in the process of finalizing a joint review panel process for the proposed project.
The draft Guidelines were the subject of a public consultation from December 2007 to February 2008. The final Guidelines, along with more information on this project, are available on the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry (registry number 07-05-26178) and on the Department's Web site.
Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro proposes the development of two hydroelectric generating stations on the Lower Churchill River. The proposal includes two potential sites. One is a 2,000 megawatt project at Gull Island, which is 225 km downstream from the existing 5,428 megawatt facility at Churchill Falls, and the other is an 800 megawatt project at Muskrat Falls, which is 60 km downstream of Gull Island.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency and the Environmental Assessment Division of the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Environment and Conservation administer the federal and provincial environmental assessment processes, which identify the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to respectively address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
