The Honourable David Emerson, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today concluded a two-day visit to Afghanistan n where Canadians, working with Afghan officials, have begun implementing the six priorities and three new "signature" projects announced by the Government of Canada on June 10, 2008. Canada's engagement in Afghanistan has taken a new di rection that will contribute to a measurable improvement in the lives of citizens living in Kandahar province between now and 2011.
"Canada's men and women are doing tremendous work in a challenging situation in Afghanistan," said Minister Emerson. "The dedication, ingenuity and resilience of our civilian and military team on the ground are having a positive effect, both in Kandahar and across the country. Working with the Afghan government and the international community, we are moving forward and improving the lives of ordinary citizens."
Minister Emerson visited the Arghandab region and viewed the Da hla dam, one of Canada's three signature reconstruction and development projects aimed at providing citizens of Kandahar with basic services such as water, education and health care. During his visit to the region, the Minister met with civilian and military officials who are working closely together on projects involving health promotion, public safety and agricultural support.
During the trip, Minister Emerson took part in a series of successful meetings with Afghan and international officials, including Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai and Foreign Minister Rangeen Dadfar Spanta. The meetings provided the Minister with opportunities to reiterate Canada's commitment to working with the Afghan government, its people, the International Security Assistance Force and the international community.
Canada's whole-of-government approach in Afghanistan reflects the three pillars of the Afghanistan Compact: security, governance and development. Canada supports work in these mutually reinforcing areas by drawing upon resources and expertise from across th e federal government.
