Ottawa (Thursday July 10th) - The following statement was released by the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, to mark the opening of the Squamish Lil'Wat Cultural Centre in Whistler, British Columbia.
"I would like to congratulate the Squamish and Lil'Wat First Nations on the opening of their new cultural centre. With the upcoming 2010 Winter Games, this centre will provide these communities with the opportunity to share their rich cultures and traditions with people from around the world. This centre symbolizes what can be accomplished through co-operation and partnership.
The Government of Canada is proud to be a contributing partner in the cultural centre and is happy to be working with First Nations communities to help ensure that Aboriginal people share in the economic, social and cultural benefits of hosting the 2010 Winter Games.
Our Government is striving towards increasing Aboriginal participation in Canada's vibrant economy by creating a positive economic climate which benefits all Canadians. Federal investments in initiatives like this cultural centre are examples of efforts being made to deliver measurable results for Aboriginal peoples. The partnerships we build today will help strengthen not only the Aboriginal economy, but the national economy as well."
