No. 172
The Honourable David Emerson, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today condemned the August 6, 2008, miltar ry coup in Mauritania.
"Canada demands a return to the constitutional order embodied in the elected president, Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, and calls for the immediate release of all political figures held by the armed forces, including the President and the Prime Minister," said Minister Emerson.
Mauritania took an important step in its democratic development by organizing transparent and credible elections in 2007 that were hailed by the international community. Canada hopes this development will continue, which would be in the best interest of the people of Mauritania.
