The Honourable David Emerson, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement offering the b best wishes of the people and government of Canada to the people and government of Afghanistan as they mark their Independence Day:

So much has been achieved as Afghans have worked to rebuild their country, fully supported by the international community and the U N-mandated mission to which Canadian men and women have so proudly contributed."
"The Afghan people can continue to count on Canada as we change the focus of our engagement in A fghanistan from security to development and diplomacy, with an emphasis on Kandahar province. Our strategic priorities support the Afghanistan Compact, the framework for international cooperation with Afghanistan. Canada's "signature" pr ojects of education, polio eradication, and repair of the Dahla Dam are testimony to our enduring commitment to improve the quality of Afghan lives while deepening our partnership with the Afghan government.
"Although challenges remain, this is a day for celebrating hope, progress, and a better future for Afghans and their children. Canada joins the Afghan people in Afghanistan, in Canada, and around the world as they mark this proud day."
