QUÉBEC CITY, August 21, 2008 - Daniel Petit, Member of Parliament (Charlesbourg-Haute St-Charles), on behalf of the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women and Minister for La Francophonie e, today attended a presentation ceremony for an honorary doctorate that Université Laval has awarded to internationally renowned Quebec singer Céline Dion.
During this ceremony, Ms. Dion also received the 400 th Anniv ersary Commemorative Medallion from the Société du 400 e anniversaire de Québec. This medallion, the result of cooperation between the Royal Canadian Mint and the Monnaie de Paris, highli ghts the exceptional contributions of certain individuals to the celebrations for the 400 th anniversary of Québec City and to the city's development.
Minister Verner wished to convey her sincere congratulations to Ms. Dion. "Céline Dion is a citizen of the world who promotes Canada wherever she goes," said Minister Verner. "Ms. Dion has graciously given the people of Québec City the gift of a large-scale show to mark the city's 400 th a nniversary. The 400 th Anniversary Commemorative Medallion, which was also awarded to her today, recognizes her contribution. Congratulations, Ms. Dion!"
"Céline Dion is an example of talent, discipline, simplicity, and great generosity," said Mr. Petit. "As such, she is a great source of inspiration for the people of this country. The Government of Canada is very proud of this wonderful ambassador for our country. She is a model of success and remarkable dedication. I offer her my warmest congratulations for this honorary degree."
Tomorrow evening, Minister Verner will attend Céline Dion's performance. "This show is certain to be a highlight of Québec City's 400 th anniversary celebrations!" said the Minister.
